Austrian Government To Provide Production Insurance Backstop

Here’s the answer to the insurance conundrum for re-starting film production.

Per THR, Austria’s government has created a $28 million fund to cover the costs of delays in film or televison production as a result of Covid-19.

Like the U.S.’s Federal terrorism insurance, the Austrian government will pay local productions up to $2.8 million to cover costs if a lead actor comes down with the corona virus. International productions will get half of their costs reimbursed.

Applications for virus related costs can be submitted until the end of 2020.

Getting something like this in the U.S. is highly unlikely as the Senate has been focused primarily on appointing judges and the States are reeling from the unemployment and other costs related to Covid-19. Production insurers do not appear to be willing to write coverage, forcing producers to self-insure.
