VC Unicorn Crowdfunds News Operation

Would you donate to a crowdfunding effort by a Silicon Valley Unicorn?

BuzzFeed News, a private venture capital backed company valued at over $1.7 Billion, is, according to the Wall Street Journal, planning to ask readers to donate “between $5 and $100” to help support the BuzzFeed news community.

Ad Age says: “BuzzFeed reportedly missed its revenue target last year and has been trying new money-making tactics; a year ago, it embraced programmatic ads, including banner ads, which was a change of heart from a company the VP of which reportedly once said people are “more likely to summit Mount Everest than click on a banner ad.””

Perhaps the smart money needs to pony up a few more bucks to keep the press free.
